The 6 Human Needs (we all crave them)
>>These first four are our body needs<<
- Certainty – we want to know that we have a sure thing.
- Variety – we want to be stimulated and be able to grow.
- Significance – we want to know that we matter, and furthermore, that what we do matters.
- Love & Connection – community, being a part of something, and being valued by others.
>>These last two are our spiritual needs<<
- Growth – if we’re not growing, evolving… it feels like dying. We want to become better versions of ourselves.
- Contribution – we all want to feel like we are providing value toward the things we believe in.
The first four needs (the body needs) must be met and we will do anything, give up anything, to get them met.
It’s human nature.
Though we can live without the spiritual needs, it’s important to note that we won’t be able to get those spiritual needs met until we have all four body needs met.
Here’s the important thing about these needs…
An addiction is created any time 3 of the 4 body needs are met. The mind will recognize that whatever the environment is, it is meeting the body needs and it wants to hang on to it and nurture it.
Why is this important to leadership, staff management, and client success?
Simple.
How To Create A Winning Team Using The 4 Human Needs
When you create an environment where your staff and clients are getting their human needs met, they are happier, perform better, stay longer, and have a “give more” attitude.
They’re also:
-31% more likely to achieve their goals
-36% more motivated
-33% more likely to help others achieve their goals
Employees like that will have a very dramatic effect on your bottom line.
Most of all, if you’re not meeting at least 3 of those needs — certainty, variety, significance, love and connection — you will have a higher turnover rate in both your staff and your clientele.
Try these practical steps toward creating a motivating environment with a focus on meeting those human needs:
- Eliminate De-motivators
- Unfair application of policies – enforcing them on some employees and not others.
- Little or No Supervision – we all need direction as well as reinforcement.
- Bad working conditions – passive aggressiveness, gossip, fear mongering, etc.
- Foster Motivators:
- Achievement
- Recognition.
- The work they do, and it’s importance.
- Their personal responsibility and responsibility to others.
- Reinforce the following:
- Progress toward objectives/goals
- Achievement of objectives/goals
- Growth on the job (or as an individual client toward goals)
- Continually share your company’s vision and their role in it – show your employees why they are important
- Finally, encourage creativity – welcome ideas, expand on them, have a “With” and “For” attitude
As a result of creating an environment that focuses on meeting the basic human needs of others (People First), it will have a BIG impact on your bottom line.
