It’s a powerful thing. It shapes what we will do and what we will not do. What we think is possible and what we think is impossible.
Clients come to you with all kinds of beliefs about what they think you can do for them. They believe they’re different and you won’t be able to help someone like them. Simply because they haven’t been able to solve their issue. Furthermore, neither have any of the ‘guru’s’ they’ve read about to try to solve their issue on their own.
Worse yet, is when a client is so rooted in their belief that they consistently challenge your Authority (expertise, influence) when it comes to health and fitness, so as to justify to themselves that their failure will be your fault as it was with so many before you.
Skepticism, contempt, unwillingness to try new things…these are just symptoms of the client’s belief system that has been warped by their own experiences and failed attempts in the past.
These are the most difficult clients. They sabotage their results by engaging in emotional eating, or justify behavior that they know won’t get them to their goal. These client’s are not fun to train.
So what can you do with a client that is entrenched in their beliefs and you know that it is the very thing holding them back from the results they desire?
I BELIEVE the answer to that question is diligent, yet patient, and pro-active (rather than reactive) COACHING!
And by coaching I mean the ongoing relationship that focuses on the client taking action toward the realization of their vision, goals or desires. A process of inquiry and personal discovery to build the client’s level of self-awareness and personal responsibility, and provides the client with structure, support and feedback.
Changing the client’s own perspective by increasing their awareness and personal responsibility for doing what is necessary to reach their desired goal.
“Training” does not accomplish this. Rather, training is just a modality applied to create adaptation of the physical body. Obviously a vital component to programming to get results for clients.
But Coaching is what creates the shift in belief that unlocks a client’s potential to achieve their greatest results AND maintain them for life-long health.
Now that same client from above that sabotages results and justifies poor behaviors, and who tried multiple times in the past but failed with other systems and trainers, becomes your greatest advocate because they BELIEVE that you are the reason they were able to finally breakthrough.
They believe that anything is possible.
That anyone can achieve the results they’ve achieved.
And that they can help their friends by sending them to you because you made it possible for them.
Now multiply that client by the dozens or even hundreds of clients you currently serve.
What would that do for your bottom line?
What would that do for your celebrity status?
How much easier would it be to sell your services with a TEAM of walking billboards shouting your praises and selling your services for you?
I believe better coaching is the answer. Connecting the client to themselves and increasing their own responsibility for their issues. Bringing them to the answers instead of having the answer for them.
