Staffing and staff management is not a “sexy” 😍 business topic.
(There I said it)
Let’s face it… it’s not like marketing and sales consulting where the “Hook” is the amount of 💵💴💶 you can generate on your investment.
Honestly, when was the last time you heard someone talk about “generating massive ROI” from his or her new hire?
Marketing and sales are the Ferrari 🏎 of the fitness industry (all business really), and staffing is like the Honda Odyssey mini-van with the built-in vacuum in the back. 🚌
After all, you can’t fit an entire training staff in a Ferrari.
But staffing is an essential component of a business, especially a service business.
Do you know Why? –> Scale
There are three vital components that must be mastered for a business to grow successfully.
- First, you have to SELL. This means you must learn marketing to attract the right people, then you have to master a sales process so you can sell those your marketing attracted into your business.
- Next. You have to SERVICE the people which you attracted and sold into your program. They trusted you enough to pay you to get them the results you said you could get them.
- Finally, you have to SCALE. The first two you can do on your own without any help or staff, and you can do it well. But, if you want your business to continue growing you’ll need others to be a part of your team. You by yourself are a “choke point” in your business, limiting the number of people you can serve and ultimately the impact you can have.
See if this sounds familiar…
You started, most likely, in this business because you had a passion for fitness and a desire to help people.
Perhaps you started out working for a gym and soon realized you couldn’t train the clients the way you wanted.
So you found some space to lease and began working for yourself.
Suddenly you have to generate new clients for yourself because you have rent to pay where you train, you left behind health insurance at your job, and all your other personal bills are still due every single month.
What do you do?
Invest in a program to help you improve your sales and marketing skills.
And it works‼
Now you have leads coming in and you’re closing sales.
Life is good. 👍🏼
Until….
It hits you that you’re the only one that can service these new clients. And you do.
But you do so by sacrificing time. 🕗
Time with your loved ones. Missing birthdays, special events, and even small things like eating dinner together.
Time for your hobbies and other activities that make you who you are.
The time that you will never get back.
If you want to stop ✋🏼 trading your personal time for 💰, you have to learn how to leverage a team in order to scale up your business and revenue.
Scale improves the ability to maintain performance, usefulness, and usability regardless of expansion.
Without a system in place to do that, you WILL lose profit or at the very least minimize it.
In fact, I believe the proper implementation of a staff management system will yield greater profit in the long run 🏃 over the short term ROI generated by your marketing.
So why is it the least discussed component of building a strong business?
It’s not sexy as I said.
And…
…it’s hard❗
It requires months, maybe even years, of consistently applying the right steps in the right order and having the discipline to repeat them as often as possible until it’s full-proof.
You don’t see the fruit 🍉 of that labor for a long time.
(Nor does anyone else–which is another discussion for a different day)
Much like child rearing/parenting.
You have to stick to core principles and usually will have to repeat them over and over. Molding and shaping over time.
It’s not til our children reach young adulthood that we see the by-product of our parental work.
👶🏼>👦🏼>👱🏼
Leading, managing and scaling a team is no different.
So, now what?
Ask yourself the following:
✔Do you want increased profitability in your business so you can reinvest in growth for greater impact? (Real profit, not ROI which is what is commonly flaunted as the golden goose)
✔Do you want increased personal freedom so you can spend more time with friends and family, or work on higher scale projects that align with your mission?
✔Do you want more stability in your business so you don’t have to worry about leads and where your next client is going to come from?
