I’m going to ruffle some feathers with this post. But that’s okay. Sometimes we have to plant our feet and announce to the world where we stand.
Let me get this out of the way right now…
I am not knocking online personal training or online personal trainers. I have nothing against anyone that pursues it as a career. In fact, I think it’s a great career, and if you enjoy it, by all means, go after it and be the best you possibly can be doing it.
However, I am flat out in disagreement that online personal training provides real freedom. It doesn’t and I’ll explain why.
IT ONLY PROVIDES LOCATION FREEDOM
Freedom can be defined in many ways, and each individual expresses their personal freedom differently. Online personal training does give a personal trainer freedom.
Only one though.
Location freedom. Basically, you can be anywhere in the world and create programs, email clients, etc. So you aren’t tied down or limited by your location.
Online personal trainers can attract clients from all over the world and never have to meet them in person.
This gives the online personal trainer freedom of location. The ability to pick up and go anywhere, at any time, with anybody and they never lose the ability to keep earning and growing their income.
Obviously, this is the major draw for fitness professionals that seek out this type of career.
But freedom has many more facets. Location is just one.
YOU CANNOT SCALE ONLINE PERSONAL TRAINING
A scalable system improves the ability to maintain performance, usefulness, and usability regardless of expansion.
Unfortunately, online personal trainers don’t have the ability to maintain performance and usefulness under expansion.
They are a limited resource and will reach critical mass without the ability to scale and continue growth for their business.
Each individual online trainer eventually reaches the point where they lose time freedom because of the demands placed on them by the growing number of clients for whom they have to create programs and perform follow-up accountability via email and phone calls.
Once that capacity is reached the business no longer grows…
…unless the individual increases the rate they charge for the service they provide.
But there’s a problem with that as well.
IT IS A COMMODITY
With just a minor amount of research, it was easy to see that the majority of online personal trainers are currently charging anywhere from $25 to $125 for a 4-week to an 8-week program, which includes weekly accountability follow-ups via email.
The growing trend of online personal training has created a market that competes on price.
Because any Tom, Dick or Harry can get the exact same information by doing a basic search on YouTube. The only thing folks are paying for is the accountability, and if they can get it ANYWHERE online from the lowest bidder, what do you think they will do?
Buy from the cheapest.
There’s just no way to differentiate in a saturated market, especially when anybody that gets a $99, weekend personal training certification can set up an Instagram account and start attracting people on social media to buy their oversimplified programs and cheap accountability.
Furthermore, the math just doesn’t add up. Do you know how many $47 “programs” you would have to sell in order to make $100,000 a year?
That’s individuals buying online programs from you to improve their health and fitness that could easily be doing a quick Google or YouTube search for a program that they can follow to get the same result.
Now… can you make a living as an online personal trainer?
But what will you have to give up in order to make that living?
Freedom of your time to be precise.
You have to spend countless hours marketing to attract leads and prospects. Creating content, building funnels, updating your social media, etc. etc.
Hours of writing programs for these individuals, if you’re truly serving them by listening to their needs and building a program for them that will get them results i.e. what you’re selling them!
Hours upon hours following up with emails to hold these folks accountable so they do follow through and get the results you promised them they’d get from your coaching.
And you’ll be doing this all by yourself.
Just to make $100,000 per year.
Sounds exhausting. But hey, you’ll be able to travel wherever you want, right? And enjoy that travel with all the time you’ll have too. (denote sarcasm)
WHAT DOES FREEDOM LOOK LIKE?
“Okay,” you exclaim, “but what does freedom look like then?”
Glad you asked!
Real freedom, the kind that those promoting online personal training as a business speak about, is found in leveraging a team of like-minded individuals that you train, manage, and lead to achieve amazing results for the clients you worked so hard to attract to your business.
You invest in others and develop them into becoming leaders within your organization.
The business maintains performance, usefulness, and usability regardless of the expansion because you are continually building the resources that provide the service for which you sell.
The result you experience is the freedom of time, the freedom of quality, and a financial freedom that continues to grow exponentially with each resource you add to the business.
Real freedom is found in becoming a leader. An individual that helps others see the uniqueness in themselves and leverages that into providing those individuals a vehicle for using their unique gifts to help others.
Real freedom is found in releasing control and trusting another with delegated responsibilities, decisions, and tasks that provide a framework for a unit to achieve a mission on a grander scale.
If you want real freedom…time, quality, and financial…you must learn to lead and manage a team that can scale as your business grows.
Only then will you experience the kind of freedom that online personal training claims you can achieve.
